Scholarship Award - CleanEdison's Annual Essay Contest, USA

Description
Significant unemployment and underemployment in the United States has been the focus of the nation's political discourse since 2009. Unfortunately, with traditional sectors struggling, both experienced workers and unemployed individuals are finding it difficult to find work. The truth is that traditional industries such as construction, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and engineering are in an extremely favorable position to be re-trained for green jobs. However, often times, those in the construction and trades sectors are completely unaware of the projected impacts of energy efficiency and renewable energy. More important still, they lack the knowledge that their current skills are particularly prime for filling the positions the green economy is creating. In addition, opportunities exist for the low-skilled workforce in areas such as building material reuse and deconstruction.

Benefit of the scholarship: The winners of the contest will receive $500

Eligibility
  • Any current student between 17 and 23 years of age

Application Procedure
Write a 750 word essay on the growth of the clean energy and energy efficiency sectors, the effects this will have on job creation and the need for skills training to meet this demand. Please send your essay to: julia.zhou@cleanedison.com

Scholarship For PhD Level in Experimental Particle Physics at Stockholm University, Sweden

Description
It has been more than 20 years researchers at the international laboratory CERN in Geneva designed and built the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC is now providing the world’s highest energy collisions. The ATLAS experiment analyses the debris from proton-proton collisions at the LHC with the aim of investigating open questions in modern physics such as the hierarchy problem with the Higgs boson mass, what is dark matter made of, how is the observed pattern of elementary particles generated, why is the universe dominated by matter rather than anti-matter. The Stockholm University group is active in the ATLAS experiment, one of the two largest LHC experiments. The group has participated in the construction of components of the ATLAS detector and we maintain a responsibility for maintaining and calibrating these devices. Concerning physics analysis the group is playing a leading role in searches for signatures of hitherto unseen particles and physics processes which are not predicted within the Standard Model of particle physics. Such particles are predicted within a number of theories such as supersymmetry and could account for the Dark Matter of the Universe.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for this scholarship grant, applicants meet the following requirements:
  • one should have studied at least four years at a University and have a BSc in Physics.

  • Furthermore, the successful applicant should be willing to travel to meetings with collaborators outside of Sweden and possibly spend periods of at least several months duration at CERN.
