PhD Positions to Study International Criminal Trials as Theatrical Performances at VU Amsterdam, Netherlands

Description
International criminal trials are not solely a matter of determining individual guilt or innocence. They also provide a platform for competing narratives about the nature and evolution of conflicts, about conflicting world views and about diverging conceptions of justice. Participants use international trials to broadcast their worldviews to wider audiences. Legal scholarship, however, has neglected the theatrical elements of international trials. This project seeks to remedy this neglect through an examination of cases across different courts and tribunals, studying linked dramaturgical and political strategies exhibited by key participants. The research potentially includes material as diverse as documentaries and films, for the way in which international criminal trials are narrated and portrayed.

Benefit of the program
The successful applicants will receive salary in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and amounts to € 2.042,- gross per month in the first year up to € 2.612,- in the fourth year (salary scale 85) based on a full-time employment.

Description
The fellowship award is annually provided by the Oak Institute brings an Oak Human Rights to teach and conduct research while residing at the College. The Institute organizes lectures and other events centered around the fellow’s area of expertise. The purpose of the fellowship is to offer an opportunity for prominent practitioners in international human rights to take a sabbatical leave from their work and spend as long as a semester as a scholar-in-residence at the College. This provides the Fellow time for reflection, research, and writing.

The fellowship recipients are expected to responsible include regular meetings with students either through formal classes or informal discussion groups and assistance in shaping a lecture series or symposium associated with the particular aspect of human rights of interest to the fellow. The fellow also is expected to participate in the intellectual life of the campus and enable our students to work or study with a professional in the human rights field.

The 9-month Fellowship Programme is composed of two consecutive phases which provide Fellows with advanced and customized research and training opportunities in their chose fields:

The Master of International Commercial Arbitration Law program provides a truly international and comparative study of arbitration law from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The ICAL program brings together about thirty exceptional young lawyers from all regions of the world each year to engage in an interactive program taught by academics and leading practitioners.

Eligibility

• Chinese citizens with a Bachelor of Laws degree from a university in China.
• To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must hold a university diploma in laws or an equivalent law degree of at least 120 (180 ECTS) credit points (a three‐yeardegree) at the time of application. Applicants must also meet the English language requirements for admission to the programme.

Application Procedure

• Complete and submit the application form electronically. There is no need to provide any supporting documents with the application form, as we will acquire them directly from our Admissions  department.

• Please note that scholarship applicants must also separately apply to the Master programme in International Commercial Arbitration Law through the University admissions website, www.universityadmissions.se. Applications may be made fromDecember 1, 2011 to January 16, 2012 or from March 15, 2012 to April 16, 2012.

Vivian Wong Postgraduate Scholarship For Manland China and Hongkong Students At Kent University, UK

Description
The scholarship is open to full-time postgraduate students enrolling onto programmes at Kent Law School. Applicants should be either passport-holders of the People’s Republic of China or permanent residents of Hong Kong not currently registered on a postgraduate course at the University of Kent. Applicants should have received an offer of a place at the University of Kent for 2012 entry.

Eligibility

• either hold a valid passport issued by the People’s Republic of China or be permanent residents of Hong Kong
• have been assessed as overseas for fee purposes
• been offered a place to study on a University of Kent postgraduate law degree programme
• have accepted or will accept by 31 May an offer of a place to study at the University of Kent.
• have already achieved or will achieve an agreed level of academic performance in their academic study prior to starting their programme at Kent. (Note: the scholarship will only be confirmed when the student has been offered an unconditional place at the University)
• be able to provide evidence satisfactory to the University of an adequate knowledge of written and spoken English
• be able to fund the remaining costs of their studies at Kent from other sources
